The Other Strawberry Festival: Stories of People, Land, and Resistance is a free virtual gathering to explore issues of food injustice and grow solutions. The second annual event is presented as part of the Encampment for Citizenship’s Social Justice in Action Series. It is hosted by the Pesticide-Free Soil Project (PFSP) and MICOP’s Tequio Youth Group. Join us May 1, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. PT to hear from leaders in environmental justice, youth organizers, and view a showcase of winners of the art and poetry contest. The presentation will be offered in English and Spanish. El Otro Festival de la Fresa: Historias de la gente, la tierra y la resistencia es un encuentro virtual gratuito para explorar los problemas de la injusticia alimentaria y buscar soluciones. El segundo evento anual se presenta como parte de la serie Justicia Social en Acción del Campamento para la Ciudadanía. Está organizado por el Proyecto Suelo Libre de Pesticidas y el Grupo Juvenil Tequio de MICOP. Acompáñanos el 1 de mayo de 2022 a la 1:00 p.m. PT para escuchar a líderes de la justicia ambiental, organizadores juveniles, y ver una muestra de los ganadores del concurso de arte y poesía. The Other Strawberry Festival: Stories of People, Land, and Resistance
Strawberry Festivals across the U.S. celebrate the berry industry, bring together communities, and offer delicious tastes of strawberry-themed snacks. However, there are many conversations that could be an important part of these events – including talking about the impact of conventional strawberry growing on farmworkers’ and the planet’s health. The Other Strawberry Festival is a place for these conversations, featuring community leaders, growers, farmworkers, and youth organizers who are working to create change for a more just and healthy food system for people and the planet. Join us to grow the conversation!
Art and Poetry Contest: As part of the Other Strawberry Festival, we are calling on poets and artists 22 years of age and younger to submit works of poetry and visual art. Young poets and artists are asked to respond to questions surrounding food system injustice in their creative works. Through this contest, we hope to raise visibility for stories of food system injustice and imagine new possibilities for a more-just food system. This contest has no geographic boundaries.
Winners will receive prizes from Patagonia, a financial sponsor of the Pesticide-Free Soil Project and share their entries at the Other Strawberry Festival. The deadline for submissions is APRIL 22, 2022, Earth Day. Click to enter the contest: (requires gmail account):

El Otro Festival de la Fresa es un evento virtual para conversar sobre el impacto del uso de pesticidas y la injusticia racial en el cultivo convencional de la fresa, reuniendo a la comunidad para crear un cambio para un sistema alimentario más justo y saludable para la gente y el planeta.
Jóvenes artistas y poetas: Como parte del Festival de la Otra Fresa, estamos convocando a poetas y artistas de 22 años o menos a presentar obras de poesía y arte visual. Se pide a los jóvenes poetas y artistas que respondan a cuestiones relacionadas con la injusticia del sistema alimentario en sus obras creativas. A través de este concurso, esperamos dar visibilidad a las historias de injusticia del sistema alimentario e imaginar nuevas posibilidades para un sistema alimentario más justo. Este concurso no tiene límites geográficos.
